Conférence inaugurale - Mardi 15 novembre 13h45

Regenerating disciplinary content knowledge to equip the young for the 21st Century challenges

Olivia Levrini, Université de Bologna

The talk aims to stimulate the reflection on demanding but timely questions:  Why is there a need for systemic change in education? What are the big trends shaping education of the future? What features should have the educational models of the future? What role will be played by the “traditional disciplines” in the educational systems of the future?

Stimuli for grappling with these questions will be provided from two European projects: FEDORA and IDENTITIES. The first project, FEDORA (www.fedora-project.eu), aims to regenerating the ecosystem of science learning by developing a future-oriented model to enable creative thinking, foresight and active hope as skills needed in formal and informal science education. The second project, IDENTITIES (www.identitiesproject.eu) has been designing novel teaching approaches on interdisciplinarity in science and mathematics to innovate pre-service teacher education for contemporary challenges.

Both the projects will provide examples and research results to argue why disciplinary learning could play a fundamental role in the education of the future, provided that it is re-vitalized by questioning it against themes like sustainability values, future literacy, embracing complexity, agency, imaginative and creative thinking.
